In India, the electrification competition has already begun, and every brand is preparing a challenger. MG already offers four cars in India's portfolio, with the ZS EV being the only one that is entirely electric. It features a 44.5kWh battery with a 419-kilometer range, but it costs more than 20 lakhs—the actual price range is 21-24.7 lakhs.
"We've been thinking about an EV for our next product after the SUV Astor, and we've been quite encouraged by the government's clear certainty that EV is the way to go."
While there are no specifics on their upcoming EV, we do know that it will be significantly less expensive, with a smaller battery and range. MG has not announced whether they will construct a new model or select one from their worldwide lineup, but this EV for India will be a crossover. He also stated, "We have made the decision to introduce an EV by the end of next financial year." He expects the pricing to range between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh, and it would be aimed at the mainstream market of personal electric mobility. It's more of a crossover, and it'll be built on a worldwide platform that we'll develop.
MG will localise items such as motors and battery assembly, as well as many other components, to comply with the government's standards for the vehicle sector's production-linked incentive plan (PLI).
"We'll tailor this automobile to the range, Indian rules, and consumer preferences... It will be developed specifically for India. We'll get to work on it right away. This is the kind of tipping point we've been talking about, where if we can make a car for between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh, we'll be able to sell a lot of cars. So hopefully, this will be our mass-market electric vehicle."
The next crossover EV could be a completely new design or one of the EVs on display at the 2020 Auto-Expo, such as the E200 microcar or the Marvel X SUV. These are cars that have been rebadged from other SAIC brands.
This future electric vehicle is slated to debut in March 2023 and will cost between $10 and $15 lakhs. It will compete with the Nexon EV, a planned electric version of the XUV300, and maybe the Venue EV.
